Same Old Sky | Epilogue

.:. Several Weeks Later .:.

Dear Trisha,

Heodwyn has taught me amazing things.
Until now, I've hardly though about Yasmine, or Dillano, or the note I found in the back of the picture frame (which I have, hidden under Chaos's small bed) But I'm beginning to wonder. Is she here? I'm about to go, I have a private audience with the queen and I want to ask her for more details.

Same Old Sky | Chapter Twenty

The dove and the message waited while Heodwyn taught me so many things I thought my head would burst.

She also let me take home the book I had been reading, and by the time I got home it was pitch black, and surprisingly I still wasn't hungry from lunch.

I thought about writing a letter to Trisha but couldn't make myself, so I went to bed without changing or writing or.. anything.

I woke up several hours later from a dream about my thoughts earlier that day, and rolled over to find a warm silver cat sleeping next to me.

Fairly young, with a bow around its neck and a note by its nose saying 'For Erulastial'

I finished the book of medicine from Heodwyn by slivers of moonlight at the windowsill and then went back to bed.

When I woke up the Next morning I was ready for anything.

Pulling on black leggings and a golden tunic, my dove pendant, and braiding my hair, sliding on boots, washing my face, and petting the cat, (who surprisingly liked the dove)I was about to leave when I heard a crash, and looked over to survey this scene :

The cat had just pounced on my beauitful pile of books, causing paper, dust and ink to fly everywhere. The dove was preening its feathers on the windowsill.

Immedietly I had names for my two pets : Peace and Chaos.

Same Old Sky | Chapter Nineteen

Soon my body relaxed and I picked up the book, putting it on the bench. "Do you have a candle?" I asked hopefully.

The elf laughed. "No, Erulastial, I do not have a candle. But, if you like, I will show you more than that book can teach you."

I looke up eagerly. "Truly?"

"Truly," said the elf, smiling kindly.

I wrinkled my eyebrow for a moment. "May I ask a question?"

"Well, what is it?"

"What would I call you?"

The elf looked thoughtful for a moment, then nodded decisively to herself and said, "Heodwyn. I will teach you to be a healer - But not just a healer. Of course, you may stay in this tent all your life and play doctor to these people, or you could become a protector."

"A protector?" I echoed.

"Yes-- Or an assassin. There is much you can do with knowledge like this," said Heodwyn gravely.

I do admit that I felt a slight spark at the word Assassin, but I hope to simply be a healer.

"Well, can you teach me?" I said hopefully.

Heodwyn laughed, making me feel a bit childish.

"Yes, child I will teach you. Come here," she beckoned to a bench just as the dove flew back through the canopy.

"Well you're a fast one!" I exclaimed, and Heodwyn laughed again. "Yes, our doves are quite fast. That is why we use them," she said the last in the tone of someone stating something obvious, but I said nothing, only anxiously unrolled the note :

Dear Sam -

I hope you are happy with the elves. We have just finished classes. We are going down to the docks to talk. All of us. Mitch says not to worry, don't know what that's about. Much Love as Ever,

Trish

Same Old Sky | Chapter Eighteen

I walked gracefully (I hope) down the stairs to the grassy area, searching for something to do.

In the elvish books, it had said that as an elf walked around the woods for a first time they would find their calling, their purpose.

I felt nothing. Zilch, zero, nada.

I walked past EVERYTHING, or so I thought.

Finally I came to a small canopied tree, and pushing aside the curtain door, I stepped in.

A healers tent. No one was there, and although I wasn't quite sure it was proper, I found my hands pulling down a book from the shelf, sitting on the bench and reading enthusiastically.

Perhaps too enthusiastically, for I did not hear the owner of the tent come inside, nor notice their presence as they watched with amusement at this young elf with the gift of healing.

Soon I looked up, for it was getting dark and hard to see, hoping to find a candle, instead I saw a tall silver haired elf, wearing deep purple.

I leapt up, dropping the book, blushing furiously.

The elf laughed. "Do not worry. It is only that you are a healer. You would never dare otherwise. It is how I found my calling.." for a moment she was lost in memory and I was frozen in fear.

Same Old Sky | Chapter Seventeen

I tied the message to the dove's leg with a length of ribbon (that I found in my dresser drawer) that was the lightest shade of sea blue I'd ever seen.

I kissed her head once and picked her up, letting her fly out the window, then sat on my bed, staring into space.

Soon I went to my trunk and pulled out the books on elvish protocal, making lists and notes on the paper.

After what seemed like a brief second, but was really several hours, I was done. I lined the books up neatly on my slender wooden shelf and looked around.

I discovered a small cubby room next to my bed and opened it.

Inside were dozens of dresses, exactly my size, along with several tunics and leggings, boots and soft shoes like ballet flats, only.. So much more beautiful!

When I had tried on every single dress, hanging it back up, I finally decided on a silver dress with a gold linked chain around the waist and coming down to form a type of dovetail between the dress and skirt, and a small pendant that I found tucked beneath my pillow along with a note from Eruraviel.

The pendant was the ivory shape of a dove, taking flight.

I brushed my hair and braided it according to the protocal I had just devoured, in two thin braids at the front pulled back to hold it out of my face.

It was much more effecient than it looks, and that, I'm sure is the reason that the elves chose it.

Same Old Sky | Chapter Sixteen

The elf's kind smile slowly faded. "Erulastial, you must come now."

Trisha teared up, along with me and Ali. We all hugged for a moment, then I stepped to the elf. "I'm ready now," I whispered, and we disappeared.

I felt as though I was swimming through the aura that had appeared in my room earlier, and it was wonderful.

Soon we materialized in a forest covered with silver trunked trees with an intricate platform incircling all of them and several things on the ground as well, bows and arrows, horses, young elves dueling with sticks.

I sighed in contentment. This was where I belonged.

A little girl ran to me and placed a circlet of silvery flowers on my hair, giggling, then ran off.

The tall elf spoke once more : "My name is Eruraviel. I will show you to your chambers."

And so she did, to my magnificent, beautiful chambers looking at the sky and a field of wildflowers.

I put down my backpack on the simple wooden bed and investigated the trunk at the foot of it.

In the trunk were several books about elvish customs, and very much paper, quills, and ink.

Immedietly I pulled out paper, a quill and ink and knelt at the trunk, writing a brief letter to Trisha while the dove, whose name I had not decided on yet.

Dear Trisha,

I am now with the elves. My window over looks a field of wildflowers and a magnificent sky. I wish you could be here. I must go,I have much to learn.
