Same old Sky | Chapter Six

Trisha shrugged. "I donno, you're kinda the hateable type, ya know?" she said, popping a bubble, then walked over to read over my shoulder.

My 'short story' was actually a doodle of Ali. Her hair was so much fun to draw. Instead of making her look like she really did right now, bending over her math book, I made her an elf -- Pointed ears like mine, A pale green flowing dress, and isntead of a book she held a small racoon.

"That looks good," said Trisha. "Is it Ali?"

"Yup," I said, adding my signature with a flourish.

Suddenly Ali Mason and Jordon all stood up. I realized that it was getting rather dark and put my notebook in my bag, changing it for an overstuffed bag of firecrackers.

I also pulled out a lighter, starting with a sparkler. I waved it around, pretending to be the statue of liberty or something. It was cold down by the water, even for July, so I was wearing a sweater, doubling as protection from the flying sparks as well as the cold.

We went through firecracker after firecracker, saving the roman candles for last. Then we all lined up on the deck, with a few stragglers who had wandered in once we started, holding donated roman candles, and shot them into the water. It looked incredible. The firey globes all shooting into the water at the same time, emmitting gorgeous light.

It was almost too much for my eyes, and several people danced around, screaming "I'm blind I'm blind!!!" once we used everything up.

The stragglers left, and so did Ali, and Jordon, who claimed they had to leave early in the morning for spring break. We all did, but hey, why sleep?

And so Ali and Jordon were laughingly banished from the deck, with several empty firecracker boxes thrown after them, none of which that hit the two nerds.

Me, Trisha and Mitch all sat, swinging our legs over the deck and throwing cracker jacks at each other. We were comfortable with each other now, but I knew that when we got back from spring break .. Everything would be different.

After a lot of pointless conversation, I screwed up my courage and asked. "So has anyone noticed anything .. different about my ears?"

Mitch turned pale and Trisha looked at me suspiciously. "Did you get them pierced?"

"No way! My parents won't let me pierce my ears 'till I'm seventeen."

"That's harsh" said Trisha.

"Yes" muttered Mitch.

My heart sank.

"Yes - Yes what?" I said nervously. Trisha took my hand.

"Yes, there is something different about your ears."

I turned to Trisha, begging my ears to show themselves. "Are you sure you can't see them?!" I said quietly, half begging.

This time Trisha turned pale. "Y-yes. THey're pointed." suddenly the color returned to her face and she reached up and pulled the tip of my ear. Hard.

"Ow!" I yelped.

"They aren't - They aren't fake?" Whispered Trisha, her color once again leaving.

"Would I have time to apply fake ears in the past thirty seconds without you noticing?"

Mitch stayed silent.

"No.. You have a point. What happened?" said Trisha

"I don't know!" I hissed. "They just .. are pointed! And my hair is lightening up and I think .. I'm morphing."

Trisha laughed nervously.

"Morphing?"

Mitch turned around, looking annoyed.
